Baháʼí News – Many have long observed the tendency of Baháʼís to distance themselves from political discussions and ongoing global conflicts, raising questions about the underlying reasons for this approach. This is not due to apathy or disinterest in what is happening, but rather stems from fundamental spiritual principles and firmly established tenets at the core of the Baháʼí Faith, which aim to build a world where peace and unity prevail.
Unity as a Core Principle
The principle of the unity of humankind is the cornerstone of the Baháʼí Faith. Baháʼís believe that all human beings originate from one source and that their diversity is a source of beauty and strength, not a cause for division and conflict. This vision necessitates transcending narrow affiliations such as nationalism, race, or class, and focusing on a unifying human identity. Engaging in political debates based on partisan or national interests often deepens divisions, which fundamentally contradicts this essential principle. Baháʼís strive to promote unity through their actions and stances, not by siding with any party in a conflict that promotes division.
Shoghi Effendi and the Universal House of Justice Statement
Shoghi Effendi consistently emphasized the spiritual significance of the work of the Faith and the firm resolve with which the believers must perform their sacred duties, while also warning against engaging in any political debate, entanglement, or disputes. “Let them rise above every particularity and partisanship,” he urged on another occasion, “above the trivial disputes, the petty calculations, and the fleeting passions that agitate and attract the attention of a changing world.” These are the inevitable froth and tremors that rise with the continuous waves in a turbulent and divided society.
Statement of the Universal House of Justice, Riḍván 2017 The National Spiritual Assembly is confident that the beloved friends will realize the high standard to which we are all called, and will appreciate the necessity of not being drawn into the divisive, controversial discussions that lie at the root of so much of humanity’s suffering.
Let us bear in mind that it is the plans of the Universal House of Justice that we are enjoined to focus our time and energies upon, and that these will prove to be the most efficacious remedy for the tribulations facing society today.
The methods and instruments of the Plan enable every soul to contribute a measure of what humanity needs today. The pursuit of the Plan is not a temporary balm for the pains of the moment but the means through which long-term processes of construction are set in motion, unfolding over generations, in every community. All this points to an urgent and inescapable conclusion: there must be a rapid and sustained increase in the numbers of those dedicating their time, energies, and concentration to the success of this enterprise.
Avoiding Fanaticism and Partisanship
The Baháʼí Faith prohibits its followers from engaging in fanaticism in all its forms, whether religious, ethnic, national, or political. Fanaticism fuels conflicts, blinds eyes to truth, and closes minds to understanding. Therefore, Baháʼís refrain from joining political parties or getting involved in their campaigns, as this often requires loyalty to partisan interests at the expense of the public good and justice. They believe their commitment should be to humanity as a whole and the principles of divine justice, not to temporary ideologies or partisan programs.
Spiritual Politics vs. Traditional Politics
Baháʼís believe that current politics are often based on narrow interests and the struggle for power, leading to corruption and conflict. Instead, they believe in the necessity of establishing a new world order based on spiritual and ethical principles. This does not mean they are uninterested in governance or social organization; on the contrary, they support concepts that promote justice, equality, and prosperity for all. However, they believe that real and sustainable change must come from a transformation in hearts and minds, and from applying spiritual principles in all aspects of life, including governance.
The Baháʼís’ Role in Building Peace
Instead of engaging in conflicts, Baháʼís focus on positively contributing to building their communities and promoting peace. They participate in activities aimed at improving social conditions, promoting education, and disseminating ethical values. They believe that by building strong and cohesive local communities, they pave the way for a more just and peaceful world order. This practical and constructive role characterizes their stance, as they see true solutions lying in cooperation and joint construction, not in argumentation and dispute.
In short, the Baháʼís’ distancing themselves from political debates and global conflicts is not an escape from reality, but a deep commitment to their fundamental principles that call for unity, avoiding fanaticism, and striving for a world order based
on justice and love. They seek to be part of the solution, not part of the problem…More.
