Dire Health Condition of Dr Foad Moghaddam in Raja’i Shahr Prison

ABN Bahá'í News :

ABN NEWS- The Bazdasht website has reported the dire health condition of the 66 year old Baha’i

prisoner Dr Foad Moghaddam. Dr Moghaddam, who is a physician, has been in Raja’i Shahr prison

since 2012. He was born in Abadan, in the southwest of Iran, and is a resident of Isfahan.

According to the report, Dr Moghaddam is in poor health, and as a result has been hospitalised on

several occasions since his imprisonment four years ago.

Dr Moghaddam suffers from heart disease and diabetes and should be on a special diet. He is

also suffering from arthritis and lumbar degenerative disc disease. The latter has caused him

serious complications, as result of which he is almost paralysed. General movement is

impossible for Dr Moghaddam, and he must use crutches for walking.

Dr Moghaddam requires regular, uninterrupted medical care, and must in due time undergo much-

needed surgery; however he has been repeatedly denied a furlough, even though he is in the

fourth year of his five-year prison sentence.

Dr Moghaddam is among several Baha’is who have been sentenced to long terms of imprisonment

even though they have never committed a crime. Baha’i prisoners are often denied furlough or

necessary medical treatment.

In another case, the Baha’i prisoner Mrs Mahvash Sabet 1, who has been in prison for the last

nine years, is suffering from heart disease and serious osteoporosis. Also, another Baha’i

prisoner, Mr. Afif Naeimi 2, was recently transferred to the prison clinic because he had become

unconscious; however he has now been reported to have regained consciousness and is

somewhat improved.

1. Mrs. Mahvash Sabet is one of the seven Baha’i leaders who were initially sentenced to 20 years

imprisonment. The seven formed the entire membership of the now-disbanded group known as

the Yaran or “Friends in Iran,” who tended to the spiritual and social needs of the 300,000-

member Iranian Baha’i community.
